The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

But a week later, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
