The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
