The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
